Nigeria’s journalism and communication community has been thrown into mourning following the death of renowned journalist, communication scholar and media veteran, Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale.
Professor Sobowale reportedly died on Thursday, October 8, 2026, at the age of 85.
The news of his passing was made public by his son, Richard Adeyinka Emmanuel, who announced the death in a statement on behalf of the family.
According to the statement, the respected journalist and scholar passed away in the morning of October 8.
“My father, Pa Deacon Professor Idowu Akanbi Sobowale, OON, 85, joined the saints triumphant this morning, October 8, 2026,” his son said.
The family also revealed that arrangements for his burial will be communicated at a later date.
“Details of his funeral rites [will be] announced by the family soon,” the statement added.

Professor Idowu Sobowale was widely recognised for his contributions to journalism, communication and media education in Nigeria.
